TOPEKA —
Flat earth advocates are struggling with the explosive news that Eratosthenes calculated the Earth’s circumference using shadows and geometry over 2,200 years ago.
Michael Papadopoulos, president of Topeka’s Flat Earth Society, discovered the ancient knowledge while researching his family’s history and broader Greek history and heritage.
“So, this guy, Eratosthenes, apparently observed different shadow lengths and different places and did some geometry and figured out the circumference of the Earth,” Mr. Papadopoulos explained. “Circumference implies a circle which is what makes this so perplexing, and as a Greek, I’m just terribly disappointed.”
Mr. Papadopoulos’ struggle is shared by other members of the group. Lisa Barber exclaimed, “it’s frightening to realize that the absurd notion that the Earth is round was being propagandized two and a half centuries before Jesus.”
