New York —
New FDNY Commissioner Lilian Bonsignore has appointed Rosie O’Donnell as the patron saint of firepersons in her first official act since being appointed by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
“As we move forward with out primary mission of including the under-represented in the Department, we are proud to be the first fire department to have a patron saint who isn’t a saint,” Commissioner Bonsignore remarked at a public unveiling of Saint O’Donnell’s altar.
“While I tend to flee to another country when I imagine anything threatening, I am honored,” Ms. O’Donnell said from her home near Dublin, Ireland. “Like Lilian, I know nothing about fighting fires and her appointment and my promotion to sainthood shows how we can fight the patriarchy by using labels.”
